Bonding is the cheapest, quickest and most reversible cosmetic treatment we do, and for a lot of people it is the only one they need.
Composite bonding means adding tooth-coloured resin directly to a tooth, shaping it by hand and hardening it with a light. One appointment, in most cases with nothing drilled away first. If you decide in three years that you want it gone, it comes off and the tooth underneath is the tooth you started with.
Cheap, fast, reversible. That is why we suggest it before anything permanent, and why cosmetic dentistry websites skip over it — it does not cost enough to advertise.
What Bonding Fixes Well

The common thread is small, local problems on a tooth that is otherwise sound. Bonding is very good at those and poor at everything else.
What Happens at the Appointment
One visit, usually forty minutes to an hour for a single tooth. We match the shade against the neighbouring teeth, lightly etch the surface, apply a bonding agent, then build the composite in layers, curing each with a light. It is contoured, checked against your bite and polished. Anaesthetic is often unnecessary because there is usually no drilling, though we can freeze the area if you would rather. You eat normally the same day.

Porcelain lasts longer and holds its colour. Bonding costs a fraction as much, takes an hour, and removes no healthy enamel.
Veneers Are Oversold. Bonding Usually Is Not.
We will not prepare eight healthy front teeth for veneers because someone saw a result online. Once enamel is removed it does not come back, and that tooth needs a covering for life. Fair trade for genuinely worn or badly discoloured front teeth. Poor trade for one chipped corner and a small gap.
A large share of the people who ask about veneers get most of what they want from a clean, a course of whitening and one or two bonded edges, at a fraction of the cost and with every option left open. Bonding first makes porcelain no harder later.

The Real Limits
- It stains. Coffee, tea, red wine and tobacco darken it over years, and unlike enamel it cannot be whitened back.
- It chips. Composite is weaker than porcelain, and a bonded edge under a heavy bite is a repair waiting to happen.
- Expect roughly five to seven years. A maintenance item, not a permanent restoration.
- It cannot fix structural damage. A cracked, heavily filled or root treated tooth needs a crown.
- It will not straighten teeth, though it can disguise slight misalignment.
If you grind, bonding on front edges has a short life. A night guard is the difference between a repair that holds and one you are back for in eighteen months.
Whiten First, Then Bond
Composite does not respond to whitening gel. Whatever shade it is on the day it is placed is the shade it stays. So whiten first, let the shade settle a couple of weeks, then have the bonding matched to the new colour. The other way round leaves brighter natural teeth beside a bonded patch that now looks dull, and the only fix is replacing it.
Bonding Over Gum Recession
Exposed root surface is darker than enamel, softer and often sensitive to cold. Bonding covers it, but only once the gum condition is stable. Bonding over active gum disease means the recession carries on underneath and the margin ends up exposed anyway. Treat the cause, then cover the damage.
Looking After It
Brush and floss normally — bonded edges can be flossed. Cut back on what stains if the colour matters, and do not use bonded front teeth to open packaging. Surface staining is polished off at regular cleanings, and we check the margins at your routine examinations. If a bond chips, most are repaired chairside.

Bonding is the least expensive tooth-coloured cosmetic treatment, and the cost per tooth depends on how much surface is rebuilt.
Coverage turns on one distinction. Bonding purely to improve appearance is cosmetic, and no plan covers cosmetic treatment. Bonding to restore a tooth that is decayed, chipped or worn is a restoration, frequently covered like a filling, because the material and procedure are the same.
