Finding a dentist who takes ODSP is harder than it should be. Many practices in Windsor-Essex do not, which leaves people either going without care or paying out of pocket they do not have.

What ODSP Dental Coverage Includes
ODSP provides basic dental coverage for adults receiving support, and for eligible dependants. Broadly this covers:
- Examinations and X-rays
- Cleanings and preventive care
- Fillings
- Extractions
- Emergency treatment for pain and infection
- Dentures, subject to approval and frequency limits
Coverage is based on a schedule of approved services and rates. Some treatments require prior approval before we can proceed — where that applies, we submit the request and wait for a decision rather than starting and hoping.
Where ODSP Falls Short
Being straight about this is more useful than pretending otherwise.
ODSP dental rates sit below standard fees, and the schedule does not cover everything. Crowns, implants and cosmetic work are generally outside the program. Some restorative treatment is only partially covered.
What that means in practice: sometimes the fully covered option is an extraction when a root canal and crown would have saved the tooth. That is a real and frustrating trade-off, and we will lay it out honestly rather than making the decision for you.
Where there is a gap, we tell you the number before treatment. Always.
You May Also Qualify for CDCP
Being on ODSP does not automatically disqualify you from the Canadian Dental Care Plan. The programs are coordinated to fill gaps rather than duplicate each other, and CDCP covers some services ODSP does not.
If you are on ODSP and have not looked at CDCP, it is genuinely worth doing. Ask us and we will help you work out whether it is worth applying.
Children in Your Household
Children of ODSP recipients are generally automatically enrolled in Healthy Smiles Ontario, which provides fully covered dental care for under-18s. Check your paperwork — a lot of families do not realise they already have it.

Yes. We are not going to take your call and then tell you the list is full.
Will I have to pay anything?
For fully covered services, no. Where treatment falls outside the schedule or exceeds the approved rate, there may be a balance — and you will know the amount before we begin.
What if I need something ODSP does not cover?
We talk it through. Sometimes a covered alternative is reasonable. Sometimes it is worth checking CDCP eligibility. See affordable care options.
